Compaq, Verizon Start First LTE Netbook

On Tuesday, Hewlett-Packard's Compaq division announced the first netbook to take advantage of Verizon's ultrafast LTE network.
The Compaq Mini CQ10-688nr will be sold online at Verizon's online store beginning August 4 for $499.99, Verizon said. Data plans will begin at $30 per month.
The netbook includes a 10.1-inch anti-glare, 1,024-by-600 display powered by LED backlights. The tablet is also powered by Windows 7 Home Starter Edition.

Inside the netbook is a 1.66-GHz N455 Atom processor, the same processor as was included in the existing HP Mini 210-2000. That's not good news; PCMag.com tests showed that the processor slowed down under simple loads like multiple browser tabs. Where the Mini excelled, however, was in battery life, with uptimes stretching to almost 10 hours. Verizon hasn't listed the battery specifications for the CQ10-688nr, however, beyond just stating that it is a 6-cell battery.
Other specifications include a 250-Gbyte rotating hard drive, a full gigabyte of DDR-3 memory, a VGA Webcam, as well as 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi.

The primary reason to buy the netbook, however, is the integrated LTE radio, running on Verizon's 4G LTE network, which dominated every metro area in PCMag.com's 2011 fastest mobile networks tests.
Overall, Verizon's LTE system is remarkably faster than the technologies AT&T, MetroPCS, Sprint and T-Mobile are currently using for '4G,'" mobile analyst Sascha Segan wrote. "Even with one hand tied behind its back—a 20-percent penalty to its speed score for its lack of rural coverage—Verizon's new 4G network trounced the other carriers. In many areas, it was even faster than some DSL or cable connections.
Unfortunately, that speed doesn't come cheaply, however.
Verizon charges $30 for a monthly data allowance of 2 Gbytes/mo; $50 for 5 Gbytes/mo.; and a whopping $80 for just 10 Gbytes of data per month. And, since it requires a new subscription, there's no apparent way that a user can be grandfathered in under an existing unlimited plan.
